In which rooms must a mezuzah be installed?

In the following article, we will answer a few questions: Why is a mezuzah needed in a room? In which rooms is a mezuzah required? Is a mezuzah needed in the kitchen? Is it permissible to install a mezuzah at night? In general, we will answer all questions about the correct placement of the mezuzah according to Halacha.

Why do you need a mezuzah in every room?

According to the laws of mezuzah 60 of the Rambam – it is mandatory to place a mezuzah on every door of every room in which we sleep, including the external door, i.e. at the entrance to the house. Every room, including the bedroom, is required to place a mezuzah, even if it is an interior room, so they are installed in all rooms of the house. For those who like to combine style and elegance with the mitzvah, you can browse our catalog >> Designed Mezuzahs and enjoy a selection of handmade mezuzah cases.

Do you need a mezuzah in the kitchen?

It is stated in Yalkut Yosef 16 that even in a kitchen where there is an entrance, we are required to place a mezuzah (without a blessing) whether or not we eat in the kitchen. Of course, the kitchen space must be at least four cubits by four cubits, and so must the size of the other rooms in which a mezuzah is placed.

Is it permissible to install a mezuzah in a room next to a toilet? And is a mezuzah installed in a toilet?

Well, it’s true, the mezuzah for the entrance to the house is truly the most important of all, but we are obligated to install mezuzahs in every room of the house, except for rooms where it is forbidden to install mezuzahs. To know additional laws and how to say a blessing for installing the mezuzah, go to the guide >> Blessing for Setting Up a Mezuzah | What blessings are said and how do you set up a mezuzah? It’s worth being careful and learning a little beforehand in order to do everything in the best way possible, after all, it’s your home 🙂

Is putting up a mezuzah at night permissible or forbidden?

The commandment to set up a mezuzah is all day and all night, therefore there is no prohibition on setting up a mezuzah at night, even though Ben Ish Chai states in Halachah 2 that the commandment to set up a mezuzah is like charity, and charity is given during the morning and evening prayers, and it is better not to give it in the evening. Therefore, if you want to get out of the doubt of the Posk Ben Ish Chai, it would be advisable to set up the mezuzah during the day. In a situation where there is no choice, it can also be set up at night.

What is the correct location of a mezuzah according to Halacha?

Installing the mezuzah in the correct location will always be on the right side of the person entering the house or room and in the upper third of the doorframe. Those of Ashkenazi faith will install the mezuzah facing the front of the house, while Sephardim install the mezuzah straight without tilting.
